THE "PICTORIAL", the "picturesque" or "cow-pies-in-the-pas-ture", whatever your temperament, it was the Romantic Movement of the early 19th century which reintroduced respectability to the land-scape. It is nothing short of amazing that landscape painting had ever fallen out of favor, given the legacy of the greatest landscape painters, the 17th and 18th century Dutch masters, without whom it is doubtful that either the English or the French or the Americans would have ever learned how to draw a tree.
